You've lit the candles, you've laid out the rose petals, you're almost set for a nice romantic evening. All that's missing is the music! It's easy to go down the cliche and normal route, but cliche and normal is boring. As such, here are some great rock and metal picks that deserve a spot on your playlist this Valentine's Day.

Creeper - "More Than Death"

A slow soothing piano and grand orchestration set the backdrop for this number, Will Gould's vocals carrying the track perfectly. It's hard to feel emotionless with the strong lyrics on show.

"From our first kiss to our last breath / With any heart I have left / I will love you more than death"

Type O Negative - "Love You To Death"

What better love than psychotic, obsessive love? Okay, maybe that's not the best type, but this track is still a worthy addition to your romantic playlist. It's slow, atmospheric, and perfect for your candlelit bedside.

There's something swooning about Peter Steele's vocals, making the track just that extra bit suave. The sentiment could come across as threatening or uncomfortable, but Steele embodies it with a soothing charm.

"I beg to serve, your wish is my law / Now close those eyes and let me love you to death"

Ghost - "Darkness at the Heart of My Love"

There's something weirdly fitting about love and darkness often being intertwined. It's a perfectly appropriate sentiment for a band like Ghost, who have often flirted with the balance between light and dark, love and death. Here is no different - this sort of ballad sound being used to demonstrate this message to great affect.

"I'm with you always, always"

System of a Down - "Lonely Day"

Whilst the message isn't particularly one of love and togetherness, there's enough that stands out here to tick the boxes.

The sentiment of struggling with loneliness is real in a lot of people's lives, but the positive note it ends is adds a last minute uplifting moment. And after all, what says 'I love you' more than choosing to "go" with someone should they go first?

"And if you go, I wanna go with you / And if you die, I wanna die with you"

Iron Maiden - "When The Wild Wind Blows"

Okay, this one is a bit of a stretch, but bear with. The track follows two people believing they are witnessing the end of the world. As such, they reflect, spending their last moments together. Pretty cute, right?

By the time the track ends, it turns out that the world wasn't ending, but the couple's fears were enough to drive them to the end. From a general perspective, it's fairly morbid, but it's also weirdly "aww" inducing knowing they clung to each other so closely.

Of course, it takes almost 10 minutes to get to the climax, so it's completely understandable leaving this one out.

"When they found them had their arms wrapped around each other / Their tins of poison laying near by their clothes"

Seether - "Careless Whisper"

Come on. It's "Careless Whisper". 'Nuff said.

"So I'm never gonna dance again / The way I danced with you"

Ice Nine Kills - "Can't Help Falling In Love"

Ice Nine Kills covering Elvis should be a surprise, but it ... isn't? The track still ties perfectly into the band's horror film driven repertoire, featuring in the Conjuring films, and vocalist Spencer Charnas carries the song with purpose.

"Take my hand, take my whole life, too / For I can't help falling in love with you"

Metallica - "Nothing Else Matters"

Backtracking a little bit, as this is definitely cliche. But it's cliche for a reason - it's slow, poignant and comforting. It's also the perfect track for someone that might not like the heavier side of things. This might not be And Justice For All level Metallica, but it hits just as hard emotionally.

"I never opened myself this way / Life is ours, we live it our way / All these words, I don't just say / And nothing else matters"

The 69 Eyes - "Dance D'Amore

Goth rock is often intertwined with feelings of love and intimacy. There's something just right about it all, a natural catalyst being drawn close to someone. The 69 Eyes are a prime example of this, especially with this number.

Low pitched vocals, soft, soothing rock, and a simple message help this track stand out.

"Baby, won't you dance with me into the night? / To the serious moonlight"

Cradle of Filth - "Stay"

Another cover, but still a noteworthy addition. The dual vocals here perfectly capture the dynamic of the song, and the orchestration at the start builds a cinematic, emotional picture.

Dani Filth's vocals are definitely an acquired taste, but the track is done justice here.

"If this world is wearing thin / And if you're thinking of escape / I'll go anywhere with you"
