Following on from February's "Slept On", Peterborough local JROWSY has released "black add white", a poignant piece of heartfelt songwriting. Whilst a new release, it is by no means a 'new' song - anyone who has seen Jrowsy live will recognise this track, as it has been a staple of his live set since his first show.
It's hard reviewing a track already so engrained in my brain. That said, it's great seeing the track finally get the recording treatment it deserves. Time and production magic have been very kind here.
The stripped back nature of Jrowsy's previous tracks remains a key aspect, the resonant electric guitar complementing the vocals nicely. For a relatively thin texture, it doesn't feel like its missing anything.
It might not offer anything new instrumentally, but the emotional beats of the track land effectively, and the vocals add power and nuance.
It's a particularly relatable message - slowly drifting from an old friend, wondering how they're getting on, questioning if you're still friends, but in the end still hoping they're doing well. This is an area where Jrowsy excels - delivering songwriting that, whilst personal, speaks to the listener.
With the release date for the full EP still unconfirmed, "black add white" continues to show glimpses into what we can expect. Jrowsy's strength is his songwriting and lyricism, and this EP looks to showcase this at its best.
