Birmingham's Gnawing Hunger were brought about in 2021, a product of the UK lockdowns. Described as a "powerhouse collaboration" between some top Brummie metallers, it's easy for the band to feel pressure to deliver. Luckily, with new track "Imposter", the band have indeed delivered something worth your attention, and are paving the way for stratospheric heights.
A dark, almost synth-sounding guitar starts the track, before heavy chords are layered on top. This is very reminiscent of Ghost's "Kaisarion", except the uplifitng and jubilant feeling is replaced with something sinister and ominous. A tad more evil.
This builds up, culminating in a barrage of heavy riffs, angry vocals and thunderous drums. Beneath the aggression though, there is still melody, adding depth to the track.
The breakdown at the mid-point of the song is delectably heavy, filthy and sexy in equal measure, balancing groove with aggression almost perfectly.
This is a track perfectly deserving of the 'stank face' often associated with the genre.
This is a big track with big production, a sign that if if Gnawing Hunger weren't already on your radar, they better be after this.
"Imposter" is out NOW on streaming services
