Hailing from the South East of England, XNRS (pronounced Exsinerus) emerge as "avatars of war", promising a heavy blend of atmospheric synths and dark metal subgenres. Their debut single, "The One", has seen the band reach great acclaim, featuring on BBC Introducing and carving their journey through Bloodstock's Metal To The Masses competition. But who are the avatars? Following a similar path to bands like Sleep Token and early-day Ghost, XNRS are anonymous, truly embracing the theatrical nature of a costumed act. Not a gimmick - a vessel for creativity.

Almost instantly, I was intrigued by this world being built. Gratefully, I was able to make contact with The Envoy, the band's equally mysterious messenger, to find out more.

"Around a year ago, our vocalist suggested the idea of wearing masks and maintaining an air of anonymity for the band," The Envoy explains. "We discussed potential complications, but ultimately decided that it would be something fun and a bit different. It would help to separate us from any preconceived ideas about how we might sound."

"You can bet your arse we're going to come out swinging in full force"

"Our music is full of heavy riffs and a sense of impending doom, but we also want people to walk away feeling good, feeling part of something greater."

The concept behind XNRS follows the band as "avatars of war from various mythologies" - all members are masked and costumed, adding to the theatric nature of it all. The band consists of Gurzil (vocals), Asura (guitars), Deimos (guitars) and Ares (drums). "Honestly," The Envoy continues, "I think Gurzil just wanted an excuse to wear a mask."

After some time spent teasing, the band released debut single "The One" in April 2026. "The general reception has been positive," The Envoy reflects. "It was a huge, huge surprise to receive an email saying it had been played on BBC Introducing after just a couple of days. We recorded the track ourselves which of course is pretty standard nowadays, and we had Marvin T of Tide Studios London mix and master it. It's definitely one of the most clear and polished releases any of us have helped create."

Accompanying the single, the band made their live debut at Club 85 in Hitchin, competing in their branch of the Metal To The Masses competition. XNRS were lucky to be one of two bands in their heat to go through to the next round of the competition. "Don't expect us to rest on our laurels and take it for granted! You can bet your arse we're going to come out swinging in full force."

"It would help to separate us from any preconceived ideas about how we might sound"

"There's a lot of darkness and negativity in the world right now, a lot of hatred and division. We stand for love and respect for all good people, whoever you are, wherever you're from. All are welcome to be a part of The One."

"The One" is out NOW on streaming platforms.

XNRS will be competing in the Hitchin Metal To The Masses semi-finals on the 24th May. Tickets are available now.
