After a two year gap with no new music, Peterborough metallers Hereward return with brand new single "New Worlds".
Crashing waves and a creaking boat set the scene for Hereward’s latest. This is a band that have given themselves the difficult task of topping 2022’s “Angel in the Storm” EP, but they come very close here, with seafaring single “New Worlds”. With themes of adventure, treasure and generally just sailing away in search of something better, “New Worlds” is a jaunty little number; if there was ever a chance for vocalist DC to dust off his finest jig, this is it.
The main lead riff is a delightful blend of the classic “new wave of British heavy metal” sound the band have often been compared to, and upbeat, folk metal staples. This wouldn’t be out of place on a Warhorns festival line-up.
Harmonising guitar parts and a galloping rhythm perfectly compliment the heavy riffs, and layers of choir backing vocals add depth to the sound. It’s nearly impossible to not bob your head along, especially in the breakdown/middle section.
It’s clear that this is the same band that produced “Angel In The Storm”. Hereward’s DNA is peppered throughout the track, despite the more folky sound. The instrumentals are very much classic metal - heavy, hard-hitting riffage - and the vocals are powerful as expected. However, in the two years since “Angel”, the band have only gotten tighter, both musically and production-wise.
“New Worlds” is yet another reminder that if these guys aren’t on your radar, they should be. If this is a taste for what’s to come in 2025, we have every right to get excited.
"New Worlds" is out now on streaming services
