Musicians Harv Lake and Joe Lyndon are otherwise blackened death metal project LUCRETIAN. With debut EP "Warpath", the duo get off to a very strong start.

Opener "Warpath" sets the scene immediately. This is hard hitting and heavy, exactly what you'd want from the genre. Fast drums, chugging riffs, and appropriately filthy vocals are all blended together perfectly, and when the breakdown hits, it's almost impossible to not move your head in sync. Chuck in an added 'stank face' as well - this deserves it.

The metal assault carries on through all four tracks, albeit with their own flourishes: "Absence of Light" mixes things up with a slower, more melodic section towards the end, showing the band's capabilities and technical abilities; "Veil" kicks things off with a slow, groove-filled riff, before a flurry of blast beats brings it to a close.

Guest musicians add flair to three out of the four tracks on the EP, solidifying this as a solid black metal album and a really strong debut release.

For the closer, the band have opted for a cover of Death's "Crystal Mountain". It's a solid cover, breathing new life into an old staple of the genre.

Overall, this is a near-perfect slab of death metal. There is plenty on offer to whet the appetite of fans of the heavier side of things.

If this is how Lucretian are starting 2025, I can only imagine how they're planning to end it.
