Bursting on to the scene only a few months ago in February, Northants based MYSTICIST are already leaving their mark. Debut track "Colossus" put them on the map, subsequent releases strengthened their grip, and now new release "Mass Dark Meditation" continues to clear the path.

A lead guitar riff introduces the track - it's ominous and foreboding, a warning of what's to come next. The guitar soon gives way to a groove filled, heavy riff and, not even 30 seconds in, the tone has already been set: it's low, slow, and full of aggression - a perfect rhythm for throwing your fist in the air or bracing yourself for the pit.

The vocals remain a strong point in Mysticist's sound, growling with power over the chugging guitars. In fact, the entire band are sounding tighter with each release, delivering strong, relentless riffage that grabs you straight away. You'd have no idea they're a three-piece.

A surprisingly melodic guitar solo adds some nice dynamic variation to the track, straying slightly from the often trodden metalcore/deathcore path, before coming back to the blistering heaviness one last time.

Mysticist are playing to their strengths here, delivering another strong dose of modern death metal.
