London’s NIGHT THIEVES Reach New Heights With Strong Debut Album Metaxis

By their own account, NIGHT THIEVES aren't easing up for anyone. The London based four piece have been carving away at their sound and image, resulting in the release of their debut album Metaxis. Of course, an album produced by someone who's worked with alt genre greats such as Bring Me The Horizon and Nova Twins already has that air of something special, but when paired with the drive from the band, there's a lot to like here.
Opener "Obsidian" sets things off promisingly, a familiar sound for longer term listeners of the band. The first few seconds are the sort of sound that would be perfect in a live setting, the music synchronised with lasers and flashing lights. When the full band join, everything comes together: anthemic choruses, emotional lyrics, heavy riffage mixed with pushing drums. First impressions are important, and the band have delivered here. It's easy to see why they've had the traction they have.
"Home" is, well, right at home here, offering an uplifting edge to the band's alt metal image, and "Mycelia" and "Freer" offer a heavier, chuggier side to the band. All are great showcases of the sound Night Thieves have spent so long refining and carving, strengthened here by producer Romesh Dodangoda.
Elsewhere, faster, almost more tense, "Running (Out of Time)" sees upbeat alt metal energy blended with electronic soundscapes. By the time the guitar solo arrives, nobody should be standing still. The same can be said for "See You On The Other Side" and "The Game" - lots of movement inducing riffs here, lots of fun. Jumping, pits, headbanging, take your pick.
"In Between Pt.1" and "Pt.2" offer a really succinct package, the former more electronically driven, an interlude almost, flowing effortlessly into its fuller counterpart. Songs in multiple parts can often feel interrupted on streaming platforms, the transition between them slightly jarring, but I'm pleased to say I didn't get that here.
Night Thieves set out to make an album they described as "hard and fast". They've also made it clear they're not planning on hiding in the wings. With Metaxis, the band have delivered a strong 10 track debut sure to see them reach even higher heights.
