Stoke-on-Trent trio THE REVENANTS have recently released their latest single "Hard Rock Mutt". A reworking of their 2019 track of the same name, the band have upped the standard in pretty much every way whilst still capturing the spirit of the original: tighter production, a stronger performance, and a newfound punchy energy.
The opening riff is incredibly groovy, catching your attention straight away. It then gives away to a full throttle, energetic chord sequence, complete with staccato piano stabs. It lives up to its title pretty early on, delivering that classic hard rock punch wrapped in a bluesy punk energy.
The guitar solos littered throughout are melodic and technical in equal measure - it's easy to imagine a proper "guitar soloing face", hair blowing, sweat dripping.
It's not reinventing the wheel at all, but instead it's feelgood and nostalgic, reminiscent of a time when rock 'n' roll was all about having fun and not much else. It's something I can see myself coming back to repeatedly.
It's becoming more and more common for bands to rework and re-release older material, but hey, if this is the quality of the end result, I'm all for it.
"Hard Rock Mutt" is out NOW on streaming platforms
