Ahead of their upcoming debut album due in February, The Open Flames have released "Eat Alone", a track reminiscent of the pop rock bands of yesteryear.

The sound of feedback over a drum intro leads the way for the track. It doesn't take long afterwards for the track to elicit feelings of nostalgia - distorted guitars, slow, cruising drums, and gentle vocals adding a low, melodic edge, reminding me of a Subvision-era Tobias Forge.

The instruments are mixed and blended well, creating a pleasant soundscape. It's a nice contrast to the track's slightly less uplifting message of wanting to help someone who doesn't want the help.

The lyrics do a great job of painting this message to the listener, using an effective storytelling format to build the relationship between a caregiver and their loved one.

The music is technically simple, but it doesn't leave any gaps. Everything weaves together perfectly - the band are tight in their performance, and know their craft.

The end result is perfectly deserving of the 'pop noir' label the band give themselves, straddling the thin line between catchy alternative rock and easy-listening indie.
