There's something oddly mesmerising about a band who base their entire mythos around frogs. As such, FROGLORD have arrived, putting their swampy stamp on the metal genre. The band started the year with fuzzy excellence "Herman", and are now back with a cover of none other than Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion".

The idea of a doom metal version of a blues rock classic might lead to some perfectly reasonable questions being asked, but Froglord pull it all off quite well: the fuzz and drive are dialled up to 11, there is groove aplenty, and it just feels right.

Right from the opening sequence, the whole track feels swampier and murkier - it's easy to imagine waking up and finding yourself in a weird marshland, greeted by a strange amphibious cult. Heaps of groove and riffage follow, striking the balance between stoner metal and psychedelic, and the vocals add an edge synonymous with the genre.

Gone are the more blues tinged guitar tones and instrumentation, and instead the tones are ripped straight from a Sleep album.

It's clear the band aren't taking themselves too seriously with this, and the end result is better for it. I can always appreciate a cover that dares to be a bit different.

Ending with a minute long solo pushes the track into more 'proggier' territory, not too dissimilar from the original, but it nicely caps the song off. The four minute runtime feels strangely short though - I could definitely sit and listen to a longer version.

It might not do anything groundbreaking or new for the genre, but it's a fun take on a well known song. Don't expect it to win over any die-hard Aerosmith fans, but it doesn't need to. Froglord have taken a song firmly out of their genre and effectively injected their DNA into it, breathing new, swampy life into a classic.
