Whilst I'm always drawn to heavy guitars, fast drums, and the often chaotic soundscape of rock and metal, I will always have a soft spot for the more stripped back, folk laden sounds. Saint Senara's latest, "Lost Lisa Marie", perfectly satisfies the itch - a dark, half haunting-half mesmerising ballad steeped in Cornish myth.
A sense of atmosphere is created from the get go. Guitarist Andrew Bate adds light distortion, and the thumping stomp box pushes the rhythm forward. The soundscape created here is uniquely nostalgic, and perfectly encapsulates the ballad sound.
It's easy to imagine this as the centerpiece of some maritime theatrical performance - Chloe Gorman's vocals flowing through the narrative with ease.
This is very much a staple of 'storytelling' lyrics. There is no traditional lyric structure, but this is one of its strengths.
It might not do much for people wanting heavy guitars and fast rhythms, but this is a thematically heavy track, achieved through atmosphere and stripped back instrumentation. This is another fine addition to the duo's discography.
