It's been just over a year since SKARLET ENVY opened their new era with lead single "Resurrection", but the payoff has arrived and what a payoff it is - the band's new album, "From The Ashes Of The Dark", sees the Hertfordshire gothic metallers back on top form (did they ever leave?) with 40 minutes of heavy, theatric riffage.

A ticking clock leads the way with intro track "From The Ashes", opening like a classic Hammer horror film. I'm a sucker for tracks like this, something you can only really achieve with the full album experience compared to standalone singles, so it's great to see it done effectively here.

The mood is appropriately set, and then the opening notes of "Resurrection" plays, equal parts mesmerising and haunting. Not much needs to be said here - this has been a staple of the band's live set since its release last year, balancing theatrical groove with a heavy, hard hitting punch.

With the album taking the time it did, some tracks might not be a surprise. "Label Me" is full of familiarity, but it's great hearing it get the album treatment, really capturing the sound and performance. Elsewhere, other singles "Masquerade" and "Shadows (In The Dark)" weave and flow throughout the album seamlessly - it's clear that great thought has gone into the order of the tracks, where hopefully longer-term fans can still find something new on offer.

It's in the non-singles, the previously unreleased tracks, where the album really shines, the band showing their strengths and pushing into new territory; the faster, thrashier "Break" sounds more akin to something mosh-pit inducing rather than gothic-laden storytelling; "Fairytale" returns to the traditional 'Skarlet' sound, though darker and gloomier. There is an almost alt rock groove to the track in places, accompanying the eerie vocals ("Are you well rested, Sleeping Beauty / Did you meet your demons in your dreams").

Throughout the album, everything flows effortlessly, showing the band's technicalities and varied influences. "Despair" chooses to strip things back, resulting in probably one of the album's standout tracks, and "Keep" dials up the theatrics, blending blastbeats with heavy, melodic guitars. There is an air of familiarity to this track, sounding very reminiscent of some of the band members' other project, Tellers Scribe.

The album ends on a strong, sombre note, with an anniversary version of "Believe Me". First featured on the band's debut album from 2022, this new version swaps the heavy guitars for a simple, arpeggiated acoustic guitar. The stripped back nature allows the songwriting to shine through, honing in on the emotion of the melody.

In the three years between album releases, Skarlet Envy have only gotten stronger, more refined in their craft. This album is proof, a reflection of the work they have been putting in to build both image and sound.
