Essex based We Fought A Bear Once are your typical pop punk fanfare: upbeat riffs, major sounding chord structures, and songs about love, life and everything in between. With debut EP 'Pissing in the Wind', the trio wrap it all up nicely together, complete with fancy bow.
I'll preface this with saying that these guys are worth it just for the name alone. Did they win? Did the bear win? So many questions.
The band have perfectly captured the pop punk recipe, paying homage to bands like Blink 182 and Bowling For Soup. It doesn't necessarily do anything new or groundbreaking with the genre, but it captures the most important aspect of any good pop punk band: being fun.
Opener "Wasting Time" kicks things off nicely, setting the backdrop and giving listeners an idea of what to expect over the next 10 minutes or so.
"Torn Apart" sees the bass front and centre for a slightly less uplifting approach, showing the band's ability to straddle emotions and strike the balance between uplifting and melancholy.
EP closer "Breathe" is the heaviest track, leaning towards more 'punk' than 'pop punk'. It might be the most different out of the three, but it still naturally flows and fits in. The whole EP feels cohesive, making for an enjoyable listen.
There is a lot here to please long time pop punk fans - the band's influences are clear and apparent, resulting in a really tight final product.
